We’re talking about Marvel Rivals, of course, a game that has skyrocketed in popularity over the past few months.
We couldn’t simply not talk about it, so whether you're looking to improve your skills or just starting out and curious about the game, here’s a list of 30 essential terms and concepts that you need to know to make the most of your Marvel Rivals experience. Let’s get into it!
A
Assemble Code: A code that can be shared with friends who have not yet played the game, granting both players in-game rewards.
B
Bans: At Diamond or higher, teams can ban two characters each, making a total of four characters unavailable for the entire ranked match
C
Crowd Control (or CC): A term used to describe abilities that disrupt the movement of enemies (slows, knock ups, stuns, etc.)
Comp: A term used to refer to the composition of a team, based on the characters each player selects
Cooldown (or CD): The period you must wait before being able to use a particular ability again
Chokepoint: A narrow area on the map where a team is particularly vulnerable to area-of-effect attacks and abilities
Chrono Tokens: A type of in-game currency earned by completing quests, which can be used to buy items in the battle pass

Dive: Quickly targeting and eliminating an important enemy, typically one that is providing support or dealing significant damage
Doom Match: A free-for-all game mode where players compete to be the first to secure 16 kills
Duelist: A class known for squishy characters that deal high amounts of damage
E
Elo: A rating system that determines a player’s skill tier, typically represented in points
F
Flank: Sneaking around your enemies to attack from behind or the sidelines, catching them off guard

Hitbox: The areas around a character where shots and damage are detected and registered in-game
Hitscan: A hit registration system where a shot is registered instantly as the fire button is clicked, without waiting for the shot to travel
L
Lattice: A type of in-game currency that you can purchase with real money, used to purchase skins or the battle pass
M
Most Valuable Player (or MVP): The best performing player in a match
Meta: The most powerful and effective tactics in a certain version of the game
O
One-shot: When an enemy has low health and can be eliminated with a single hit
P
Payload: The objective that a team must either push or defend on specific maps
Poke: Dealing damage on an enemy from a safe distance without committing to a full engagement
Q
Quickplay: A casual game mode where players of all ranks can team up and compete together
S
Seasons: Each season introduces new content to the game, including characters and maps, while also resetting players’ ranks
Strategist: A class featuring characters characters that heal teammates and provide utility
Snowballing: Gaining an early advantage and leveraging it to maintain dominance throughout the match

Throwing: When a player intentionally causes their team to lose the match, even when the team has an advantage
