Let’s be honest: who doesn’t love a great survival game?
While you’re probably familiar with classics like ARK: Survival Evolved, Subnautica, and Minecraft, we’re here to spotlight some hidden gems of the genre that may have flown under your radar.
Don’t worry - we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on these experiences.
Necesse
In true survival fashion, Necesse is a top-down sandbox action exploration game that lets you progress your character in a procedural-generated world. With core mechanics like fighting, crafting, and trading, it captures the genre's essence while offering plenty of depth and adventure.
What sets Necesse apart from similar titles like Terraria is its unique settlements feature, which adds a managerial dimension to gameplay. This mechanic lets you establish settlements where settlers can work alongside you, assisting in various tasks such as trading, farming, and fishing as you progress through the game.
The game also supports dedicated servers, allowing you to team up with friends and tackle the challenges the world throws your way.
Solace Crafting
Next on our list is Solace Crafting, an open-world game suited for players seeking a more grindy experience.
Similarly to other games, Solace Crafting features classic mechanics such as crafting, resource gathering, and base building. However, its standout feature is the rich fantasy elements that truly elevate the gameplay.
You can create your own class with unique skill trees to customize your character, changing your approach to the creatures and dungeons that hold valuable loot essential for progression.
This one might take some resilience to navigate its Early Access flaws, but the foundations of solid survival experience are present, making it a title worth exploring.
Abiotic Factor
This one is a standout.
Abiotic Factor is a narrative-driven survival experience for up to six players, with crafting taking center stage.
You and your lab team are caught in the middle of a paranormal containment failure, and you must work together to combat the otherworldly threats. Every object you find within the facility can be repurposed to build your defenses as you navigate the breach across multiple realms.
While Abiotic Factor is a bit more polished than Solace Crafting, it’s still in Early Access, so you may stumble into some bugs - and not just those eager to tear you apart.
The classics are timeless, we know that.
However, sometimes hidden gems emerge from the rubble, deserving of recognition. We hope you enjoy exploring these suggestions and find some new favorites!
